What is Electrical Dry Needling (EDN)?
Dry needling is the insertion of thin monofilament needles into dysfunctional tissue while low-frequency electrical current travels between them creating a therapeutic field that standard needling alone cannot achieve. EDN is a skilled intervention by a Physical Therapist used to stimulate underlying neural, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.
What are the benefits of EDN?
Deep Muscle Release:
Electrical current amplifies the needle’s effect, triggering involuntary muscle contractions that decreases muscle spasm and trigger points even in deep tissue layers conventional therapy can’t reach. (Hsieh et al ’11, Langevin et al ’15)
Accelerated Healing:
Electrical stimulation increases local blood flow and activates the body’s natural repair cascade reducing inflammation and flooding injured tissue with oxygen and nutrients. (Dommerholt ’11, langevin et al ’01, Shah et al ’08, zhang et al ’12)
Neurological Reset:
Electrical stimulation has an additive effect to the inserted needles and modulates pain signals at their source, down-regulating the nervous system’s hypersensitivity and reprogramming how the brain processes chronic pain patterns. (Sluka et al ’02, Salazar-Colocho et al ’07, Zhang et al ’12)
Minimal Downtime:
Sessions last 20–40 minutes. Most patients resume normal activity the same day. No incisions, no anesthesia, no recovery window, just targeted precision therapy
Lasting Results:
Unlike short-term pain masking, electrical dry needling addresses the structural and neurological root causes with effects that compound and persist well beyond the treatment window.
